Frequently Asked Questions
What is a humanist wedding?
A humanist ceremony is a very special way to get married – you can make it as personal and unique as you like. My job as a humanist celebrant is to get to know you and write a ceremony that tells your unique love story in the way you want. It is legally recognised and can take place anywhere (except for churches and registry offices).
The ceremony can be very flexible, and you decide on how long it lasts and what happens during it. You can include readings and music that is meaningful to you both and include other traditions or rituals such as lighting candles or hand fasting (to help you officially “tie the knot”!) It really is up to you. Anything goes! As your celebrant, I will guide you through all your options and help bring together your ideas to get your perfect wedding ceremony.
Do I have to be humanist to have a humanist wedding?
No – although many people who are not religious find that they share a lot of humanist beliefs and values. A humanist is a person who believes they have one life and resolves to live a moral and fulfilling life while respecting and protecting the rights of others and the planet. I aim to ensure an inclusive ceremony where everyone, regardless of their beliefs, feels welcomed.
What is the process?
Choosing the right humanist celebrant is important. I offer a no obligation zoom where we can have a chat to help you decide if I’m the right fit for you both. If you decide I am, we will have several meetings so that we can get to know each other and work together to create your ideal ceremony. This can be in person or on Zoom, whatever works best for all involved. You can choose your readings, music, symbolic acts and vows – I’m happy to support you with this in any way you need me to.
